IP/Core Network Engineer

Description

You will be majorly responsible for planning and design, implementation, maintenance and improvement
of AfriQ Network infrastructure.
You will be the main escalation point for network operational issues, fully responsible for keeping the
core and access network performing within the required Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Job Roles

Diagnose and resolve faults on the core network devices such as OLTs, Wireless BTSs, routers, switches,
firewalls, bandwidth managers and cache appliances.
Provide root-cause analysis for operational problems to ensure the cause of network faults is properly
identified and the correct steps are taken to eliminate re-occurrence of the same problem.
Ensure the core network performance and availability is within the stipulated Key Performance Indicators
(KPIs).
Design/Produce network architectures which when implemented meet tactical and commercial
expectations.
Ensure key network performance parameters are monitored by the NOC/Support and propose
improvements in monitoring to accurately measure the overall performance of the network.
Liaise with third-party vendors in the resolution of network and/or equipment faults.
Handle direct escalations from the NOC/Support or from other team members concerning network and
customer issues.
Act as the lead for new or ongoing projects in the core network, and other Carrier Customers.
Participate in the core network planning and budget process to ensure proper capacity to meet customer
and commercial expectations.
Provide technical leadership to ensure the company is using the best of class technologies to meet its
objectives.

Required skills

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Telecoms or related field.
At least 3 years’ experience, two of which will be in a Service Provider environment.
Must hold expert level Cisco, Mikrotik or Juniper certifications
(CCNA/JNCIA/MTCNA/MTCRE/MTCINE).
Advanced knowledge of BGP, MPLS, IP, Layer 2 switching, layer 3 routing.
Good understanding of IGPs and EGP both in IPv4 and IPv6 networks.
Experience with wireless networking and technologies.

Excellent network analysis fundamentals and robust troubleshooting skills.
Experience with operational support of an IP network
Strong Unix and Linux skills.
Advanced knowledge of DDoS mitigation technologies
Advanced knowledge of Internet cache systems
Ability to present and articulate technical issues to non-technical staff
