About the Role
BMM is operating ventures in Africa, South America and Asia. The project is to join our data science team to develop, maintain and optimize our R code, and support the development of climate risk products across the global portfolio. The project will include getting familiar with our platforms (AgSuite) and providing quality assurance on the code. BMM makes use of alternative climate and agriculture data sets to develop index products to protect smallholder farmers, an example of such products being satellite-based weather index insurance.
Responsibilities
- Development of reusable, maintainable and testable code in the form of advanced R scripts, applications and web services
- Development, automation and review of technical architecture, requirements and statistical models
- Quantitative analysis of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data working in small teams to develop, test and harden advanced analytical models as required
- Support the development of climate risk products
Qualifications and Skills
- 5+ years of development experience in R Programming for data analysis and data management
- Experience developing climate risk products is a plus
- Experience with GIS applications (e.g. QGIS) is a plus
- Deep understanding with strong fundamentals experience in Data Structures
- Working knowledge of statistics
- Experience developing or consuming web services
- Experience with data management of large datasets
- Experience in translating functional requirements into functional and technical design specifications and in writing well designed, testable, efficient code
- Development experience in Python is a plus
- Experience working with relational database management systems. Knowledge of non-relational databases is a plus
- Experience with visualization tools like Tableau is a plus
- Experience with application of machine learning techniques is a plus
- Preferred knowledge in the financial inclusion space
- Resourcefulness and ability and drive to work independently
